Data streams in the world’s largest particle accelerator.
For everyone to see.
The European Organization for Nuclear Research, better known by the acronym CERN, searches for answers to the big questions about the universe and its origins on a very small scale. 21 international countries are members of the organization, which caused a sensation in 2012 with its suspected discovery of the “God particle”.
Scientists are currently researching dark matter. Material straight out of a science fiction novel. A subject matter that is perfect for arousing interest in basic physical research and getting “normal people” excited about science.
And the interest is indeed huge: the permanent exhibition “Universe of Particles” attracts 60,000 to 70,000 visitors to Geneva every year. Reason enough to expand the so-called Visit Points at CERN with three new information offers. One of these is the so-called control room. With the help of a light installation, this part of the exhibition illustrates the immense streams of data that flow in the actual control room of the particle accelerator during one of the many experiments at CERN.
The installation was planned and designed by Atelier Brückner GmbH. The media planning and installation was carried out by iart ag.
A central design element of the exhibition space is a wall measuring around three by thirteen meters on the long side of the room. The panels on the wall can be controlled individually. A total of around 1,000 LED strips L25-250S MK2 in 6500K and 390 intelligences were installed. Power is supplied via four 4E system power supply units. The strips are controlled via a Pixel-Gate Light.
